Dr Mark W Drummond has served as an NHS Consultant Haematologist since May 2006 and anticipates retiring from full-time NHS practice in May 2026. He is currently part of a team of eight whole-time equivalent Haematologists delivering comprehensive care to patients with all forms of blood cancer at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre, Glasgow.

With 28 years of experience in clinical haematology, Dr Drummond continues to maintain an active and varied clinical practice. He undertakes two general haematology clinics per week (one NHS and one private) alongside two haemato-oncology clinics, including sub-specialist clinics in myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN), chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML), and acute leukaemia. His principal clinical interests include acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), CML, myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), MPN, paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria (PNH), flow cytometry, and molecular diagnostics.

He also has extensive experience in the management of other haematological malignancies, including myeloma and lymphoma, as well as stem cell transplantation. In addition, he continues to manage a broad range of general haematological conditions, including immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), autoimmune haemolytic anaemia (AIHA), and iron overload disorders, including genetic haemochromatosis.

Dr Drummond has held site and regional lead roles for acute leukaemia and MPN. He acts as UK Chief Investigator and Local Principal Investigator for a substantial clinical trials portfolio, recruiting patients from across the regional cancer network and beyond. His research leadership has been supported by membership of the NCRN MDS and MPN Clinical Trials Subgroups. Since 2012, his centre has been recognised for Phase I clinical studies and as a Bloodwise Therapy Acceleration Centre for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.

He served as Lead Clinician for the West of Scotland Blood Cancer Network from 2013 to 2018 and has chaired regional multidisciplinary team meetings.

Over the past two decades, Dr Drummond has developed extensive collaborative relationships with the pharmaceutical industry. His involvement has included three investigator-initiated trials as Chief Investigator, as well as numerous roles as Chief or Principal Investigator on commercial clinical trials. He has regularly participated in and chaired advisory boards, spoken as a key opinion leader at regional, national and international meetings, and designed and delivered industry-supported educational programmes. He has also acted as clinical lead on several formal Joint Working Projects between the NHS and pharmaceutical partners, including what was, at the time, the largest Joint Working Project in the UK.

Dr Drummond has acted as an external advisor to the Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) and NICE on multiple drug submissions and has provided advisory input to pharmaceutical companies preparing submissions to these bodies. As Managed Clinical Network (MCN) Lead, he was responsible for implementing SMC guidance across the region, including horizon scanning for emerging therapies. He also served as haematology adviser to the NHS Scotland Molecular Pathology Evaluation Panel, supporting the development of diagnostic testing aligned with newly approved therapies.

In addition, he has contributed to numerous pharmaceutical collaborations, including national and international drug launches, patient-focused educational initiatives, digital resource development, and data collection and publication projects.
